Sunday in the Park With George by Stephen Sondeim
directed by Alan MacVey
University of Iowa Mainstage
My work for Sunday had me digesting countless reference materials devoted to the work of Georges Seurat and his painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. My meticulous combing and organizing of the sketches and exploratory paintings Seurat made in preparation for the final masterpiece served as groundwork for our designers, who animated projections of Seurat’s progress on the painting throughout our production. I filled the rehearsal hall with images of late-19th-century Paris to ground our actors in the real world that inspired Seurat's fantastic interpretation. For the opening weekend, I collaborated with the curators of the University’s Stanley Museum of Art to offer audience members an afternoon tour showcasing pieces from their collection that were in conversation with Seurat.
